The first Officials Clinic of 2018 took place at the UEA Sportspark on Saturday 15th September. Over 25 Officials of varying levels and experience turned up to hear about the new rules and have a quick refresher ahead of the new season. These included: new terminology, uniform accessories, dribbling, last 2 minutes of 4th quarter, 24 second clock amendments, technical fouls, double fouls, fighting, and throw in after an unsportsmanlike or disqualifying foul - but this is not an exhaustive list! It was such a positive and friendly afternoon, which really brought the basketball community together.
Neil Baggott discussed the new rules one by one and invited debate and discussion around various scenarios. We had allowed an hour for this part, but could have easily used twice as long! For the next two hours we had a game of 4 quarters with interchanging players and officials. Everyone got to have a go in a relaxed and fun environment. Our playing teams were mixed gender and ages (children and adults). The play was spirited and it was fabulous to see some great sportsmanship alongside the actual play. The older players facilitated the younger ones, but it was still very competitive! We had a number of Table Officials running the clock and completing scoresheets with help on hand for every call. It was good practice for the hand signals to and from the Referees!
